Acts 17:5-6 But the Jews who were not persuaded, becoming envious, took some of the evil men from the marketplace, and gathering a mob, set all the city in an uproar and attacked the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. (6) But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, "These who have turned the world upside down have come here too.
The unbelieving Jews wanted to bring the apostles before the public and rulers, have them beaten, and banished. They were determined to do everything possible to put an end to the Gospel. This has been what communities, cultures, leaders and nations have tried to do across history.
This was what wise Pharisee Gamaliel told the Jewish leaders. Acts 5:38-40 And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing; (39) but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it-lest you even be found to fight against God." (40) And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
Here is a timeless principle: Anything born of human selfish ambition collapses; anything birthed of God proves unstoppable.
The Gospel is the plan of God and not of man. Galatians 1:11-12 But I make known to you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. (12) For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through the revelation of Jesus Christ. / John 1:1-4 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (2) He was in the beginning with God. (3) All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. (4) In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
Man, who is finite and meagre in strength, seeks to defy and challenge God by snuffing out the Gospel. Isaiah 14:27 For the LORD of hosts has purposed, And who will annul it? His hand is stretched out, And who will turn it back?" / Proverbs 21:30 There is no wisdom or understanding Or counsel against the LORD. Yet history repeats by humanity, from generation to generation, trying to wipe out the Gospel.
Human schemes and plans to shut down the Gospel are self-destructive. Psalms 33:8-11 Let all the earth fear the LORD; Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. (9) For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast. (10) The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; He makes the plans of the peoples of no effect. (11) The counsel of the LORD stands forever, A nation that relies on God is blessed. Psalm 33:12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, The people He has chosen as His own inheritance.
Empires have tried to destroy the Bible. The Roman Empire (Diocletian's edict, 303 AD), the Communist regimes, and totalitarian states have all failed. The Bible remains the world's most translated and distributed book - a historical fulfilment of Matthew 24:35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.
The authority of hell cannot overcome the church. Matthew 16:18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. This was God's promise to Abraham. Genesis 22:17 blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies.
The seed of Abraham is Christ. Galatians 3:16 Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, "And to seeds," as of many, but as of one, "AND TO YOUR SEED," who is Christ. All those who are Christ's are the children of Abraham. Galatians 3:29 And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
The church is the fullness of Christ, and Christ has authority over all rulers and powers. Ephesians 1:20-23 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, (21) far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. (22) And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, (23) which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
Learning: Knowing the place of the church, we plead with people to be reconciled with God.
