*Two fundamental requirements to be a friend of God* _Luke 12:4-7_
Our Lord is telling us that since we now have a deeper understanding of the wisdom of God, it now becomes our privilege and responsibility, an imperative, to proclaim the ways of God to the world. We must make known to the world the wisdom of God, however restrictive our context may be. We ought to be lamps set on a lamp stand _Mark 4:21-25._
When we do so, being the lamps of God, even in restrictive contexts, we must be prepared to face consequences. To face frightening consequences for being the lamps of God, to our world, we must know and be established on who we are. We are friends of God _Luke 12:4-5._
What are the two fundamental requirements to be a friend of God? The first is to do whatever He has commanded us _John 15:14._ This requires the submission of our will to His. The flesh or the self is against the will of God. We have inherited this predicament. The flesh cannot be subject to the law of God. Of the flesh, we cannot please God _Romans 8:7-8._ Though we are in the flesh, we must *reckon* that we are no more in the flesh but in the Holy Spirit _Romans 8:9._ The old man or the flesh has been buried with Jesus in His death, and raised by God with Christ, to walk in the newness of the Spirit _Romans 6:4._ We should no longer live the rest of our time in the flesh, for the lusts of men, but for the will of God _I Peter 4:2._ This experience is the life of faith, which leads us to the second fundamental requirement to be a friend of God.
Abraham was a friend of God. Abraham believed God and belief in God, led Abraham to act on the basis of his faith, trust, belief in God. He was willing to offer Isaac his son on the altar. Abraham was established as a friend of God because of his faith in God. Faith in God also gave Abraham his righteousness before God _James 2:21-23._
