Acts 17 - Series 01/Episode 03 - Tue 15thSep 2026 - Gospel in the public space - Acts 17:01-09 - MINISTRY IN THESSALONICA - Acts 26:19-26

(Welcome to my website: valentinedavidar.in)

Acts 17:1-3 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. (2) Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, (3) explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, "This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ."

The ministry of Jesus was not in secret but public. Luke 4:14-16 Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region. (15) And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all. (16) So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.

The answer of Jesus to the Jews about His doctrine was that His teaching was in public. John 18:19-21 The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine. (20) Jesus answered him, "I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing. (21) Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said."

The ministry of Jesus in the public space was a fulfilment of prophecy. Psalm 22:22 I will declare Your name to My brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You. / Psalms 40:9-10 I have proclaimed the good news of righteousness In the great assembly; Indeed, I do not restrain my lips, O LORD, You Yourself know. (10) I have not hidden Your righteousness within my heart; I have declared Your faithfulness and Your salvation; I have not concealed Your lovingkindness and Your truth From the great assembly.

From the very beginning, the Lord taught the Gospel of His kingdom in all the synagogues. Matthew 4:23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people. / Matthew 9:35 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. Thus the news of His teaching was known among the Jewish world. Paul and the other apostles were not bringing the message of the Gospel of Jesus in a vacuum.

The Jewish leaders were jealous and angry with Jesus, because the crowds loved His teaching. Luke 19:47-48 And He was teaching daily in the temple. But the chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people sought to destroy Him, (48) and were unable to do anything; for all the people were very attentive to hear Him.

The Jews could not accuse Jesus of false teaching. Mark 14:55 Now the chief priests and all the council sought testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none. They questioned His authority in teaching in the synagogues. Matthew 21:23 Now when He came into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people confronted Him as He was teaching, and said, "By what authority are You doing these things? And who gave You this authority?" The Lord answered their question effectively and powerfully in Matthew 21:24-26. Matthew 21:27 So they answered Jesus and said, "We do not know." And He said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

This was the same ethos that the disciples displayed as they shared the message of the Gospel in the synagogues. Paul states his position powerfully to King Agrippa and to Governor Festus. Acts 26:19-20 "Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, (20) but declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance. The message of the Gospel had been shared openly. Acts 26:22-23 Therefore, having obtained help from God, to this day I stand, witnessing both to small and great, saying no other things than those which the prophets and Moses said would come-(23) that the Christ would suffer, that He would be the first to rise from the dead, and would proclaim light to the Jewish people and to the Gentiles." / Acts 26:26 For the king, before whom I also speak freely, knows these things; for I am convinced that none of these things escapes his attention, since *this thing was not done in a corner.

As the church, we too share the message of the Gospel in the public space. No one can have an excuse to say, "I have not heard the Gospel"

Learning: Our habit is to share the Gospel openly.
