Acts 17 - Series 02/Episode 05 - Tue 13th Oct 2026 - Walk in the fear of the Lord - Acts 17:10-15 - MINISTRY IN BEREA - Job 01:01

Acts 17:11-12 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. (12) Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men.

Let us look once again at this passage. Proverbs 2:1-5 My son, if you receive my words, And treasure my commands within you, (2) So that you incline your ear to wisdom, And apply your heart to understanding; (3) Yes, if you cry out for discernment, And lift up your voice for understanding, (4) If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures; (5) Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, And find the knowledge of God.

What was it that set the Jews of Berea apart? They were those who cried out and sought for discernment and understanding. Then they understood the fear of the Lord and gained the knowledge of God. This is wisdom. Proverbs 9:10 "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding._ Are we those who are crying out for discernment and understanding? Are we longing to walk in the fear of God, and are we desiring the knowledge of God?

Yesterday, we saw how the love of money hinders us, and we lose eternal life. Mark 10:23-27 Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, "How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!" (24) And the disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, "Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God! (25) It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." (26) And they were greatly astonished, saying among themselves, "Who then can be saved?" (27) But Jesus looked at them and said, "With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible."

Being a rich man is not about the amount of possessions that we have, but about whether we are trusting riches. The Bible never teaches that wealth itself disqualifies anyone from eternal life. It teaches that trusting in wealth does. The issue is not riches, but reliance. Many of God's people-Abraham, Job, David, Solomon, Joseph of Arimathea-were wealthy. What qualified them for eternal life was faith, righteousness, a heart not controlled by wealth and the fear of God.

I Timothy 6:17-19 Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. (18) Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, (19) storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

No one can say, "I'm free from the love of money". Nevertheless, what is not possible with man, which is to be free from the love of money, is possible with God. This is why we must turn our eyes away from the material things in life and look to Jesus as our rest or habitat. II Corinthians 5:7 For we walk by faith, not by sight. This was what the Jews in Berea were doing. They were seeking the fear of the Lord.

They were seeking God so that they could learn more and more of how to place their trust in Him and not on the things of the world. We need to be rich towards God. Luke 12:20-21 But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?' (21) "So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." This was what happened with the rich fool. Isn't that how foolish people in the world are? This man thought he could secure himself with the abundance of things he had gathered. Luke 12:19 And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry." ' The Lord's answer to humanity is, Your security lies in being rich towards God. This was the pursuit of the Jews of Berea.

What were Job's qualifications? Job 1:1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God and shunned evil. Praise God for the Jews in Berea that they sought this qualification for themselves. The whole story of Job begins at this place. God will make our lives a legacy for generations when we follow the path of Job. The Berean Jews followed this path.
