“Thank You that You are longing to reveal Yourself to us. You are looking into our hearts to know if we hunger for You. Lord Jesus, we are not eager for You. We are keen to solve our problems and have our needs met. We are prone to run away from Your presence. Please have mercy on us. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.”
We have been considering the response of our Lord to the wrong perspective of the disciples of the things that had happened. The Lord led the disciples through that phenomenal study of the Scriptures.
Luke 24:25-27 Then He said to them, "O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! (26) Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?" (27) And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.
The study was completed and we can imagine how the disciples must have been stunned and astonished at this remarkable study. The time had now come for the disciples to part company with the Lord. We must keep in mind that the disciples received the study of the Scriptures but they did not know that this was the Lord Himself.
The disciples hungered for something deeper and more intimate. They knew that they could not let this Person, who had led them through the study of Scriptures, leave them and go away. They needed to know Him.
The study of the Scriptures had opened their minds and understanding. Their perspectives had undergone a major transformation but this was not enough. There was the need for a personal encounter with Jesus and the Lord was wanting to know if they hungered for that personal time with Him.
Luke 24:28-29 Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and He indicated that He would have gone farther. (29) But they constrained Him, saying, "Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent." And He went in to stay with them.
Are we satisfied with our needs being met, our desires fulfilled, our dreams accomplished or do we hunger for God?
The two disciples constrained the Lord to stay with them, not knowing who He was. This was the great step taken by the disciples. The Lord immediately agreed and stayed with them.
Imagine, friends, if the disciples had not insisted Jesus stay with them. Imagine if they had been satisfied with the Scripture study and the wonderful change of perspective, but had not known the Lord. How terrible that would have been? They would have missed the best part of that great journey to Emmaus.
Having all the understanding from the Scriptures and having a personal encounter with the Lord, are two different realities. Change of perspective is important but this must be supported by our personal encounter with Jesus. When we hunger for the Lord, He meets with us.
Psalm 14:2 The LORD looks down from heaven upon the children of men, To see if there are any who understand, who seek God.
Jacob hungered for a personal encounter with God. Jacob had schemed, manipulated, and he had got his way but he was an unsatisfied man. Jacob knew that he needed God and so Jacob wrestled with God and Jacob prevailed. Jacob had a limp on his hip but he was no more Jacob, he became Israel.
Genesis 32:24-31 Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of day. (25) Now when He saw that He did not prevail against him, He touched the socket of his hip; and the socket of Jacob's hip was out of joint as He wrestled with him. (26) And He said, "Let Me go, for the day breaks." But he said, " I will not let You go unless You bless me !" (27) So He said to him, "What is your name?" He said, "Jacob." (28) And He said, " Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed." (29) Then Jacob asked, saying, "Tell me Your name, I pray." And He said, "Why is it that you ask about My name?" And He blessed him there. (30) So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: "For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved." (31) Just as he crossed over Penuel the sun rose on him, and he limped on his hip.
We must be like Jacob, hungering for God.
Luke 11:9-10 “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. (10) For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.
Friends, this passage is about hungering for God, Himself. We must be in a place where all that we desire is for God alone.
Psalm 27:4 One thing I have desired of the LORD, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD, And to inquire in His temple.
The Lord promises that when we hunger for Him, we will find Him.
Jeremiah 29:13 And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.
Thought to ponder
When we hunger for “things”, but not for God, Himself, then we end up empty.
