📖 Luke 12:13-15
*Relationship of trust in God* _Luke 12:13-15_
We now move into a new section in our study of ‘Friend of God’. We are looking at _Luke 12:13-15._ Here a person is asking Jesus to tell his brother to divide the inheritance with him _Luke 12:13._ Our Lord’s answer to this man is "Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?" _Luke 12:14._
Isn’t Jesus supposed to be our judge and our arbitrator? This is how we would like to see Jesus. _He must judge my case, my issues and problems and do things in my favour._ We want Jesus to play the role of the arbitrator in our challenges of life. We want Jesus to prescribe solutions for us. We have certain goals and plans in life and we want God’s verdict regarding those plans that we have already made for ourselves. Once we think we have received a prescriptive answer from God, we feel relieved.
This was how it was in the Old Testament period. God’s laws prescribed rules/systems/structures under which the people had to conduct themselves. This was what the law was all about. It was God’s prescription for daily life on how life had to be lived. It was the priests who interpreted and administered the law, to the people, for their specific problems that they faced. Moses did it for the people till Jethro, his father-in-law, advised him to delegate this responsibility of judging the people to other leaders. _And Moses said to his father-in-law, "Because the people come to me to inquire of God. When they have a difficulty, they come to me, and I judge between one and another; and I make known the statutes of God and His laws." Exodus 18:15-16._
Jesus was now introducing the new covenant relationship. In this covenant relationship, God wants us to love and obey Him from the heart and not out of outward following of rules and regulations. This was how we would be His people _Jeremiah 31:33/Ezekiel 36:26-27._
For people it was very difficult to get out of the old mode of following rules and regulations. They asked Jesus, "What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?" People are still asking the same question. Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent." _John 6:28-29._
Belief in God is demonstrated by works, for faith without works is dead _James 2:26._ Our Lord said, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work _John 4:34._ Our life is now to trust Him and obey Him. This is the expression of our love for Him.
