Acts 17 - Series 02/Episode 24 - Sun 01st Nov 2026 - Team spirit - Acts 17:10-15 - MINISTRY IN BEREA - I Corinthians 03:05-09
Acts 17:15 So those who conducted Paul brought him to Athens; and receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him with all speed, they departed.
The Berean believers sent Paul away by sea to Athens with escorts. The decision to send Paul to Athens was intentional. Paul and the others would have known that Athens was a religious city, so Paul needed to share the Gospel there. Acts 17:22 Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, "Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious; Paul had a wonderful, powerful and epic ministry in Athens.
Paul was undoubtedly a powerful and gifted apostolic leader. Yet, he never saw the mission of God as an individual undertaking. He consistently built teams, worked alongside others, delegated responsibilities, developed younger leaders and recognised the contribution of fellow workers. He understood that the work of the Gospel was bigger than any one individual.
We have seen how Paul and Barnabas worked together. John Mark also accompanied them. After the separation with Barnabas, Paul worked with Silas. Paul brought Timothy and Luke into the ministry team. We have also noticed that on all of Paul's travels, he was accompanied by local believers, who served as his escorts and probably as translators. Let's look ahead and see how Paul ministered as a team.
Luke mentions that he rejoined with Paul and his team. Acts 20:4- 5 And Sopater of Berea accompanied him to Asia-also Aristarchus and Secundus of the Thessalonians, and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy, and Tychicus and Trophimus of Asia. (5) These men, going ahead, waited for us at Troas.
Paul wanted Silas and Timothy to join him immediately in Athens. But we see that they joined him only in Corinth. Acts 18:5 When Silas and Timothy had come from Macedonia, Paul was compelled by the Spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus is the Christ. Were Silas and Timothy defying Paul's instructions? No. They knew the heart of Paul that he desired for the churches to be built up and strengthened, which was also uppermost in the hearts of Silas and Timothy. Thus they had the freedom to deviate from Paul's instructions. This shows that they were not just accompanying Paul in the missionary journey, but they were truly functioning as a team with one heart and spirit.
Paul had spent a substantial amount of time in Asia, in Ephesus. Acts 19:10 And this continued for two years, so that all who dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks. Paul felt in his spirit that he must visit Macedonia and Achaia again before he went to Jerusalem. He sent his team members to Macedonia, for they would communicate his concerns correctly to the churches in Macedonia. Acts 19:21-22 When these things were accomplished, Paul purposed in the Spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, "After I have been there, I must also see Rome." (22) So he sent into Macedonia two of those who ministered to him, Timothy and Erastus, but he himself stayed in Asia for a time.
Paul had built his team so that he could entrust Titus with the task of building the churches in Crete. Titus 1:4-5 To Titus, a true son in our common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior. (5) For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you-
Paul recognised and valued the contribution of his fellow workers. Aquila and Priscilla were powerful and dependable team members with Paul. Romans 16:3-4 Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, (4) who risked their own necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles.
Timothy had a very special place in Paul's heart. Philippians 2:19-22 But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you shortly, that I also may be encouraged when I know your state. (20) For I have no one like-minded, who will sincerely care for your state. (21) For all seek their own, not the things which are of Christ Jesus. (22) But you know his proven character, that as a son with his father he served with me in the gospel.
Paul describes his teamwork with Apollos. I Corinthians 3:5-9 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one? (6) I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. (7) So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. (8) Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor. (9) For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, you are God's building.
May we all learn from Paul's ministry of serving as teams.
