Fri15Oct2021 - *Godly sorrow produces repentance * - _Luke 22:54-62_ - DENYING CHRIST (05) – Bible reading: _Luke 15:17-19_
We go away from the Lord but yet He is God who restores us back to Himself. He longs for us to come back to the close intimate relationship with Him.
_Luke 22:55-60 Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. (56) And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, "This man was also with Him." (57) But he denied Him, saying, "Woman, I do not know Him." (58) And after a little while another saw him and said, "You also are of them." But Peter said, "Man, I am not!" (59)
Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, "Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is a Galilean." (60) But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are saying!" Immediately, while he was still speaking, *the rooster crowed*._
Mark 14:72 A *second time the rooster crowed*. Then Peter called to mind the word that Jesus had said to him, "*Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times*." And when he thought about it, he wept._
Jesus spoke about the crowing of the rooster to Peter. When Peter was speaking so vehemently that he would never deny Christ, the Lord told Peter, in detail, how his denial of Christ would take place.
Was it to condemn him? Was it to consign Peter to a place of failure? No.
The Lord was using the sign of the crowing of the rooster as a way to restore Peter back to Himself and realize how fragile and weak he is in his own strength. The Lord was calling Peter to come back to Him and be fully strengthened in Him.
The Lord uses our failures as reminders of how weak we are, without Jesus. There is a need for us to repent. He is not rejecting us. He is not casting us out. He is not crushing us. He is always restoring us. He is always building us.
These experiences allowed by God are to see for ourselves, how far we have gone away from God, to repent and return to Him. These ways of God are painful but they are allowed by God into our lives for our correction.
*This prophecy of the rooster crowing was intended to restore Peter back to the Lord*.
Peter and John spoke to the people in the temple after the healing of the lame man.
_Acts 3:13-15 The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified His Servant Jesus, whom *you delivered up and denied* in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let Him go. (14) But *you denied the Holy One and the Just*, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, (15) and killed the Prince of life, whom God raised from the dead, of which we are witnesses._
Peter and John convicted the people of their denial of Christ. Yet, they did not leave the people at the point of being convicted of their sin of denying Christ. They called them to repentance.
_Acts 3:19 Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,_
Always, the Lord is not wanting us to remain in our places of defeat but to get up, repent and return to Him.
_Ezekiel 36:27-31 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. (28) Then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; you shall be My people, and I will be your God. (29) I will deliver you from all your uncleannesses. I will call for the grain and multiply it, and bring no famine upon you. (30) And I will multiply the fruit of your trees and the increase of your fields, so that you need never again bear the reproach of famine among the nations. (31) *Then you will remember your evil ways and your deeds that were not good; and you will loathe yourselves in your own sight, for your iniquities and your abominations*._
God is promising restoration and healing but all of this happens when we repent and return to the Lord. The Lord was causing Peter to repent. The Lord causes us to repent and return to Him.
We see repentance and turnaround happening in the story of the prodigal son.
_Luke 15:17-19 “But when he came to himself, he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! (18) I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, (19) and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants." '_
This is the beautiful experience of repentance that God desires from each of us. God desires for us to be restored to Him and stay with Him.
_II Corinthians 7:10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death._
There is a sorrow of the world. Many have this kind of sorrow that they did not do what they should have done or they missed an opportunity.
This is the sorrow of the world.
Godly sorrow is different. *Godly sorrow is about our sorrow over our sin against God. That is the sorrow that produces repentance*. We need to have godly sorrow.
King David had this godly sorrow.
_Psalm 51:4 Against You, You only, have I sinned, And done this evil in Your sight— That You may be found just when You speak, And blameless when You judge._
