Acts 17:11-12 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. (12) Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men.
II Timothy 3:14-17 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, (15) and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. (16) All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, (17) that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
We must continue in the things that we have learned and have been assured of. Christian life is a life of continual learning in the presence of the Lord. This correction and learning will come from others in the body of Christ, so we must be open to listening and learning from each other.
James 1:18-19 Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures. (19) So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; We are God's first fruits. To make this a reality, we must be swift to hear but slow to speak. Unfortunately, this is just the opposite with many of us. We are swift to speak but slow to hear. This is why we are not growing as first fruits of God. God uses others in the body of Christ to sharpen us in the understanding and application of the Scriptures. Proverbs 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.
The Scriptures make us wise for salvation. We are reconciled to God in Christ. Romans 5:8-11 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (9) Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. (10) For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. (11) And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
We were in a state of alienation, and we were enemies of God. We were therefore accountable to face the consequences of our rebellion against God. This is what we justly deserved. God showed us mercy that we did not get what we deserved, but by His grace, He made us worthy of Him, of which we were not worthy. Romans 5:1-2 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, (2) through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Scripture is given to us by the inspiration of God. As we come to the Scriptures, we are deeply conscious that we are listening to God as He speaks with us. II Peter 1:20-21 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, (21) for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
Scriptures give us the doctrine of God. Psalms 19:7-11 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; (8) The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; (9) The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. (10) More to be desired are they than gold, Yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. (11) Moreover by them Your servant is warned, And in keeping them there is great reward.
Man does not live by bread alone but by the word of God. Matthew 4:4 But He answered and said, "It is written, 'MAN SHALL NOT LIVE BY BREAD ALONE, BUT BY EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS FROM THE MOUTH OF GOD.' " It is the Scriptures that sanctify us. John 17:17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.
God makes us complete in Him. Colossians 2:9-10 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; (10) and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power. We are made complete in Christ for good works. Titus 2:14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.
The Jews in Berea searched the Scriptures and tested the Scriptures in their own experience.
