Acts 17:4 And some of them were persuaded; and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, and not a few of the leading women, joined Paul and Silas.
Some were persuaded to place their faith in Jesus. They joined the apostles. A church was founded in Thessalonica.
The church is of people who have chosen to be separated from the world and set apart for God. They are now identified as disciples of Jesus Christ.
The new believers in Thessalonica were taking a bold step to identify themselves with Paul and Silas. How can we describe their life now? I Peter 2:9-12 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; (10) who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy. (11) Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, (12) having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation. This is the character and nature of the church that is in the world. We must constantly validate ourselves against this picture of the church.
The Lord promises us that He would dwell in us and He would walk among us. As the church, we must be deeply conscious of the presence of God among us. It is not the good fellowship that we have among ourselves. The Lord fellowships with us. As we fellowship with one another, we must expect, and we must embrace His presence among us. He will speak His words through each of us as we commune with each other. II Corinthians 6:16-18 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I WILL DWELL IN THEM AND WALK AMONG THEM. I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE." (17) Therefore "COME OUT FROM AMONG THEM AND BE SEPARATE, SAYS THE LORD. DO NOT TOUCH WHAT IS UNCLEAN, AND I WILL RECEIVE YOU." (18) "I WILL BE A FATHER TO YOU, AND YOU SHALL BE MY SONS AND DAUGHTERS, SAYS THE LORD ALMIGHTY."
As the church of Jesus, we are kept in the world. Being the church in the world, we will confront our enemy, the devil. The world is under the control of the evil one. _I John 5:19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one._ The Lord has prayed for us to be kept safe from the evil one, though we are in the world. Hence, we ought not to be afraid of the evil one, though he will trouble us. We are being consciously and continuously sanctified by the truth of God's word, as those sent by God into the world. John 17:15-18 I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. (16) They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. (17) Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. (18) As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.
As the church in the world, we know the world hates us because we are constantly calling the world to reject death and choose life. We are calling the world to enter in by the narrow gate and find pasture. The world hates us because we claim exclusive knowledge of truth. We are warning people with all earnestness of the dire consequence of eternal destruction if they do not choose to place their faith in Jesus. These are some of the reasons why the world hates us. John 15:18-21 "If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. (19) If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. (20) Remember the word that I said to you, 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. (21) But all these things they will do to you for My name's sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me.
The church does not conform to the world but is transformed because it is constantly proving the will of God in its daily experience of life. Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
A new church was starting its faith journey with Jesus in Thessalonica.
