The Lord is giving us the opportunity to understand the grief, pain and sorrow that He had to take on Himself, which was caused by our sin and rebellion against God.
Man cannot assume that our sin has no effect on God. Our sin grieves God, terribly. We are the ones who have sinned against God but we carry on, with hardly any remorse.
Jesus was carrying our sin on Himself. Our rebellion against God, our hardheartedness, guilt, shame and our lack of remorse were all upon Jesus. He was identifying Himself fully with us, before God. He was taking our place.
The disciples, at that time, did not understand the pain that Jesus was going through in the garden. Neither are we understanding the pain of Jesus, now.
The pain that Jesus was experiencing in the garden, was far more severe than the actual physical pain that He experienced on the cross.
_Luke 22:44 And *being in agony*, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground._
Only when Jesus fully identified Himself with us, could He be our mediator, before God.
_John 12:27 “Now *My soul is troubled*, and what shall I say? 'Father, save Me from this hour'? But *for this purpose I came to this hour*._
Is there any reason for the soul of Jesus to be troubled? He is God. He need not be troubled by anything but His soul was troubled.
This was the trouble of our (man’s) soul, which our sin has caused by our break in relationship with God our Creator.
Man cannot assume that he can sin against God and remain unaffected. Sin causes anguish and pain for both parties. God and man are both deeply hurt by our sin against God.
Jesus did not commit any sin and so He need not have felt the pain of sin but He was now taking the entire sin of the human race on Himself and He was feeling the agony.
Sin is spitting on the face of the one who loves us. This is how awful sin is but we continue to sin, blatantly, against God.
_Lamentation 1:12-13 “Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? Behold and *see If there is any sorrow like my sorrow, Which has been brought on me*, Which the LORD has inflicted In the day of His fierce anger. (13) "From above He has sent fire into my bones, And it overpowered them; He has spread a net for my feet And turned me back; *He has made me desolate And faint all the day*._
It was not His sin but the sin of the entire human race, all added up together, that was now upon Him. This is why Jesus has borne greater sorrow than anyone of us can ever bear.
_Psalms 88:1-18 A Song. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. To the Chief Musician. Set to "Mahalath Leannoth." a Contemplation of Heman the Ezrahite. O LORD, God of my salvation, I have cried out day and night before You. (2) Let my prayer come before You; Incline Your ear to my cry. (3) For *my soul is full of troubles*, And my life draws near to the grave. (4) *I am counted with those who go down to the pit*; I am like a man who has no strength, (5) *Adrift among the dead, Like the slain who lie in the grave, Whom You remember no more, And who are cut off from Your hand*. (6) You have laid me in the lowest pit, In darkness, in the depths. (7) *Your wrath lies heavy upon me, And You have afflicted me with all Your waves*. Selah (8) You have put away my acquaintances far from me; You have made me an abomination to them; I am shut up, and I cannot get out; (9) *My eye wastes away because of affliction*. LORD, I have called daily upon You; I have stretched out my hands to You. (10)
Will You work wonders for the dead? Shall the dead arise and praise You? Selah (11) Shall Your lovingkindness be declared in the grave? Or Your faithfulness in the place of destruction? (12) Shall Your wonders be known in the dark? And Your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness? (13) *But to You I have cried out, O LORD*, And in the morning my prayer comes before You. (14) *LORD, why do You cast off my soul? Why do You hide Your face from me*? (15) I have been afflicted and ready to die from my youth; *I suffer Your terrors; I am distraught*. (16) *Your fierce wrath has gone over me*; Your terrors have cut me off. (17) They came around me all day long like water; They engulfed me altogether. (18) Loved one and friend You have put far from me, And my acquaintances into darkness._
This Psalm shows us the grief that Jesus had to go through to bear our sin on His soul.
Jesus was crying to the Father for the terror of the Lord was on Him. We have provoked God to wrath. He loves us but what we have given in response is rebellion. God’s wrath is heavy against us but all the wrath of God was now coming on Jesus.
Jesus was casting Himself upon God, even though God’s wrath was on Him. Where else could He go to for refuge? He had to cry only to the Father.
The Father’s heart too is breaking that He is having to pour out His wrath on His beloved Son, in whom there is no sin, but now Jesus was fully identified with the sin of humanity.
Friends, do you see what we have caused to both the Father and to the Son?
Our response has to be a response of total surrender and submission to our God, whom we have hurt, dreadfully. Our response has to be to walk in the fear of the Lord, all the days of our life.

```We need a heart of contriteness before God, not only for our sin but for the sin of our generation, for we are watchmen.```
