Acts 17:1-3 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. (2) Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, (3) explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, "This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ."
Paul stopped in Thessalonica and reasoned with the Jews for three sabbaths that Jesus was the Christ. Why is it that the Jews were the first who had to know that Jesus was the Christ?
The Gospel came to the Jews first because they were the covenant people, entrusted with God's Word, promised the Messiah, and chosen as the channel through which blessing would flow to all nations. Genesis 12:3 I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed." This was God's covenant with Abraham. A nation would come from him, and they would be blessed to be a blessing. The Jews had to be reminded of their purpose in God.
The oracles of God were committed to the Jews. They were the custodians of the word of God and passed it down, faithfully and without error, to generations. Romans 3:1-2 What advantage then has the Jew, or what is the profit of circumcision? (2) Much in every way! Chiefly because to them were committed the oracles of God. The Jews needed to be familiar with the oracles of God, of which they were the guardians.
The riches that are entrusted to the Jews are phenomenal. Romans 9:4-5 who are Israelites, to whom pertain the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service of God, and the promises; (5) of whom are the fathers and from whom, according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God. Amen. It was from the Jews that the Messiah had come. The Lord began His ministry with His own people. John 1:11-13 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. (12) But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: (13) who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
This was what the Lord told the Syro-Phoenician Greek woman who came asking Him to cast out the demon from her daughter. Matthew 15:24 But He answered and said, "I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."
However, this was what the Lord told His disciples before His ascension. Acts 1:8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." This is the Great Commission. Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. (19) Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (20) teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen. The apostles knew that they had to share the message of the Gospel to the Jews first, and then to the nations of the earth.
This was the apostles' message to the Jews in the temple. Acts 3:25-26 You are sons of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying to Abraham, 'AND IN YOUR SEED ALL THE FAMILIES OF THE EARTH SHALL BE BLESSED.' (26) To you first, God, having raised up His Servant Jesus, sent Him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from your iniquities."
This was the message regarding Jesus about whom Paul preached to the Jews in the synagogue in Antioch Pisidia. Acts 13:32-33 And we declare to you glad tidings-that promise which was made to the fathers. (33) God has fulfilled this for us their children, in that He has raised up Jesus. As it is also written in the second Psalm: 'YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU.'
This process of the Gospel has a prophetic affirmation. Isaiah 2:3 Many people shall come and say, "Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, To the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, And we shall walk in His paths." For out of Zion shall go forth the law, And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
