Acts 16 – Series 01/Episode 05 – Fri, 29th May 2026 – Godly home - Acts 16:01-05 – THE INDUCTION OF TIMOTHY – Malachi 02:15

Acts 16:1-3  Then he came to Derbe and Lystra. And behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, *the son of a certain Jewish woman who believed, but his father was Greek*. (2)  He was well spoken of by the brethren who were at Lystra and Iconium. (3)  Paul wanted to have him go on with him. And he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in that region, for they all knew that his father was Greek.

Timothy’s father was a Greek, and they had not circumcised Timothy as a child, according to Jewish customs. The home was steeped in Scripture. II Timothy 1:5 when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also. / II Timothy 3:14-15 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, (15)  and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Timothy’s father did not prevent Timothy from being taught the Scriptures. He did not prevent him from being circumcised by Paul, and he did not stand in the way of Timothy joining Paul.

All of these details put together give us an idea that Timothy came from an interesting home. He had the blessing of knowing the Jewish Scriptures because of his mother and grandmother. He was also exposed to the ways of the Gentiles because of his father.

What are we learning here? Marriage and family must be rooted in God. The husband-wife relationship and family life are a demonstration of God's covenant love in a marriage relationship with His bride, the Church. Genesis 2:23-24  And Adam said: "This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man." (24)  Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

As we decide on whom we are to marry, we must consider with utmost seriousness that marriage is not a convenience, an infatuation, a sudden surge of emotions, a physical attraction or any other matter. Marriage is about coming together as one. They are no longer two but one flesh. This is a great mystery, but this is the covenant relationship of God with His people, the church.

Ephesians 5:30-32  For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. (31)  "FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH." (32)  This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

Hosea 2:14-16  "Therefore, behold, I will allure her, Will bring her into the wilderness, And speak comfort to her. (15)  I will give her her vineyards from there, And the Valley of Achor as a door of hope; She shall sing there, As in the days of her youth, As in the day when she came up from the land of Egypt. (16)  "And it shall be, in that day," Says the LORD, "That you will call Me 'My Husband,' And no longer call Me 'My Master,'

_Isaiah 54:5  For your Maker is your husband, The LORD of hosts is His name; And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel; He is called the God of the whole earth._

God is in a marriage relationship with us, His people. He is in a covenant marriage relationship with His church. Marriage must be held in high honour. Hosea 2:19-20  "I will betroth you to Me forever; Yes, I will betroth you to Me In righteousness and justice, In lovingkindness and mercy; (20)  I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness, And you shall know the LORD.

When His people go away from Him, the heart of the Lord breaks, for He is the yearning and longing Husband, who has been spurned by His wife, the church. Jeremiah 31:32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the LORD.

We see this pain in the heart of Paul for the church that has repulsed her Husband. II Corinthians 11:2-3  For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. (3)  But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

Why does God make us one in marriage? The Lord is seeking godly offspring. Malachi 2:15  But did He not make them one, Having a remnant of the Spirit? And why one? He seeks godly offspring. "Therefore take heed to your spirit, And let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth.
