📖 Luke 12:34-34
*Receiving the unshakeable kingdom* _Luke 12:34_
Our citizenship is in heaven, from which we eagerly wait for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ _Philippians 3:20._ The process that we live out every day to embrace our citizenship in heaven is to die with Christ, be raised with Christ and therefore we seek those things, which are above. Secondly, we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven. Thirdly, we live out of the understanding that we are co-rulers with Christ.
The fourth lesson that we need to internalize in order to lay hold of our citizenship in heaven is to walk by faith and not by sight.
By faith Abraham obeyed God when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. He went out, not knowing where he was going. Abraham trusted God and did as God asked him to do but Abraham’s heart was not attached to the land. By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise.
Why was Abraham able to have the detached attitude towards land? This was because Abraham waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God _Hebrews 11:8-10._ This is the same attitude that we need to have towards the material matters of life. We need to be detached and hold the material in an open hand and handle them as stewards and not as though we posses them.
We can see the demonstration of Abraham’s stewardship in dividing of the land with Lot. He allowed Lot to have the first choice of the land. Lot chose the eastern land and they separated. The LORD said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: "Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are—northward, southward, eastward, _(the land which Lot had chosen)_ and westward; for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever. I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth; so that if a man could number the dust of the earth, then your descendants also could be numbered. Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you." _Genesis 13:14-17._ Abraham had no descendants in Genesis 13 but the Lord was promising the land for Abraham’s descendants of whom Abraham had no knowledge about.
Did this promise of God get Abraham excited and attached to the land? No, Abraham trusted God but his heart was not attached to the land. We see this explained to us by Stephen, when he says, “And God gave him no inheritance in it, not even enough to set his foot on. But even when Abraham had no child, He promised to give it to him for a possession, and to his descendants after him” _Acts 7:5._
Since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. For our God is a consuming fire _Hebrews 12:28-29._
God sees our hearts and He knows if we are attached or detached from our earthly possessions. He knows if we are living by faith in Him, laying hold of our citizenship in heaven or are we living by sight, attached to our earthly possessions.
