Acts 17 - Series 02/Episode 10 - Sun 18th Oct 2026 - Seeking God - Acts 17:10-15 - MINISTRY IN BEREA - Jeremiah 02:13

Acts 17:11-12 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. (12) Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men.

The unique quality of the believers in Berea was that they searched the Scriptures daily to be fed by His word. Psalms 1:2-3 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. (3) He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also shall not wither; And whatever he does shall prosper.

When God's word is a command to obey, it must be understood with utmost seriousness. What are the disciplines that we have put in place to study and apply the word of God as a command? The word of God must also be a delight. Discipline and delight need to go hand in hand with the word. There are definite outcomes of such a life. This life is a flourishing tree that continues to be a blessing to others. Is that how our life is today? This is a fruit-bearing life. The Berean believers chose such a life.

Psalm 119:97 Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day. Do we love the law of God? We live in an age when we need to be constantly fed with news and entertainment. We get disinterested and bored very quickly. Does the Bible grip us and hold our attention? If today we do not have a passion for the Scriptures, will we repent and ask the Lord's forgiveness and look up to Him to fill us with love for His word?

Not only is the Bible our food for meditation during the day, but we awake with the word of God, and we go to sleep, dwelling on God's word. Psalms 119:147-148 I rise before the dawning of the morning, And cry for help; I hope in Your word. (148) My eyes are awake through the night watches, That I may meditate on Your word.

We have a greater understanding than teachers and the ancients because we keep the law of God. Psalms 119:99-100 I have more understanding than all my teachers, For Your testimonies are my meditation. (100) I understand more than the ancients, Because I keep Your precepts. Understanding does not come from just studying and knowing the law of God, but by the application of God's word.

Many are asking, "How can I know the will of God in my life?" The answer is obvious. There are precepts that the Lord has already revealed to us. Have we applied what we already know? If we have not applied what has already been made explicitly clear to us, then we will not move to a higher level of understanding.

Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. We must shift from being conformed to the world to being conformed by the word of God. This is the application of the Bible to our everyday lives. This we begin in those issues in which the word of God is apparent in its application. As we do so, we will prove the will of God in our lives. Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path. God's word sheds enough light for each step of our lives. As we take that one step forward for which we have the light, the word of God will give us more light for the next step.

As a people, we must seek the word of God to guide us in our decisions as a community, society and a nation. Isaiah 8:19-20 And when they say to you, "Seek those who are mediums and wizards, who whisper and mutter," should not a people seek their God? Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living? (20) To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. We must seek and speak the word of God into our circumstances. If we are not doing so, then it is because there is no light in us.

A people who seek God will do valiantly. Daniel 11:32 Those who do wickedly against the covenant he shall corrupt with flattery; but *the people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits.

The word of God is the source of life; nothing else. Sadly, we do not seek God, but we are hoping for some other intervention into our lives in order to experience stability. Jeremiah 2:13 "For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, And hewn themselves cisterns-broken cisterns that can hold no water.

The Jews of Berea sought the Lord at His word.
