The ongoing work of the Gospel
Acts 17 - Series 02/Episode 09 - Sat 17th Oct 2026 - The ongoing work of the Gospel - Acts 17:10-15 - MINISTRY IN BEREA - I Thessalonians 01:05-08
Acts 17:11-12 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. (12) Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men.
Receiving the word of God causes us to become part of God's ongoing process. I Thessalonians 2:13 For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe. What happened with the believers in Thessalonica happened in Berea as well. I Thessalonians 1:6-8 And you became followers of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit, (7) so that you became examples to all in Macedonia and Achaia who believe. (8) For from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place. Your faith toward God has gone out, so that we do not need to say anything.
In receiving the word of God, we become part of the ongoing work of God in transforming individuals, families, societies, cultures, and nations. Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. Are we ashamed of the Gospel? Mark 8:38 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels." The Gospel of Jesus is what we live for. Mark 8:35 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's will save it.
The Gospel heals families. This is part of the Abrahamic covenant. Genesis 12:3 I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed." An example of a family coming to Christ is the family of the Jailor in Philippi. Acts 16:31-34 So they said, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household." (32) Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. (33) And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family were baptized. (34) Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household.
The Jew-Gentile divide is one of the most hostile of all walls. This wall has been broken in Jesus. Ephesians 2:14-16 For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, (15) having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, (16) and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity.
The Gospel makes us into a new community with no divisions. Galatians 3:26-28 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. (27) For as many of you as were baptised into Christ have put on Christ. (28) There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
The Gospel brings healing to the land and her people. Isaiah 32:15-18 Until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high, And the wilderness becomes a fruitful field, And the fruitful field is counted as a forest. (16) Then justice will dwell in the wilderness, And righteousness remain in the fruitful field. (17) The work of righteousness will be peace, And the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever. (18) My people will dwell in a peaceful habitation, In secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places,
The Gospel changes the socio-cultural ethos of societies and communities. Matthew 5:13-14 "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. (14) "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.
We are sent into all the world with the Gospel. Mark 16:15 And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. The Jews of Berea were preparing themselves to be part of the ongoing work of the Gospel.
