We live to bear fruit
Acts 17 - Series 02/Episode 08 - Fri 16th Oct 2026 - We live to bear fruit - Acts 17:10-15 - MINISTRY IN BEREA - John 15:16
Acts 17:11-12 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. (12) Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men.
The Jews of Berea, in receiving the word of God with all readiness, were like the good soil that received the seed and yielded fruit. Matthew 13:23 But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty."
Fruit-bearing for us is not optional. We are planted here on earth to bear fruit. Matthew 7:19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Our fruit has to be good and much. John 15:2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. / John 15:5 "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. Our fruit needs to be such so that it remains. John 15:16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.
What is fruit bearing? A tree bears fruit but does not consume its own fruit. The tree bears fruit for others to be filled and nourished. A fruit-bearing life is to fill and nourish others with the fruit of the Spirit of God. Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, (23) gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. The fruit of the Spirit is for the blessing of others. Not for us to boast about our fruit or our gifts of the Spirit of God.
Isaiah 58:10-11 If you extend your soul to the hungry And satisfy the afflicted soul, Then your light shall dawn in the darkness, And your darkness shall be as the noonday. (11) The LORD will guide you continually, And satisfy your soul in drought, And strengthen your bones; You shall be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.
How unfortunate it is when we turn the Holy Spirit's life all to ourselves. The expressions of the Holy Spirit- love, joy, peace, etc are not qualifications for ourselves; they are the medium and method by which we minister to people who need to be filled and nourished with our fruit. There is no law that is against us expressing the fruit of the Spirit through our lives.
The soil of our hearts needs to be ready to receive the word so that we bear fruit. The parable of the Sower is about the soils of our hearts. The Sower is God, and the seed that He sows is the word of God. What could go wrong that could cause less fruit-bearing? We could think of the Farmer. Farmers can make mistakes when planting seeds. Sometimes the seed is not good. In this parable, both these possibilities are ruled out because the Farmer is God. The seed cannot be bad because the seed is God's word. The only other possibility that can impact yield is the soil.
This is where we need to correct. The parable gives us four types of soil. Mark 4:15-19 And these are the ones by the wayside where the word is sown. When they hear, Satan comes immediately and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts. (16) These likewise are the ones sown on stony ground who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with gladness; (17) and they have no root in themselves, and so endure only for a time. Afterward, when tribulation or persecution arises for the word's sake, immediately they stumble. (18) Now these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word, (19) and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
The explanation for what each type of soil represents is given to us. It is for us to inspect our hearts to know which category of soil we fall under. We must move from being the first three types of soil to the fourth. Mark 4:20 But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred."
This was the exercise that the Jews in Berea were undertaking. They were making sure that the soil of their hearts was good, for the Sower is good and the seed is good. If the soil were right, then surely there would be a good yield; for this is why we live. We live to bear fruit.
