Living by God's word
Acts 17 - Series 02/Episode 07 - Thu 15th Oct 2026 - Living by God's word - Acts 17:10-15 - MINISTRY IN BEREA - Genesis 13:14-15
Acts 17:11-12 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. (12) Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men.
The Jews of Berea received the word of God as a command to trust and obey. Job 23:12 I have not departed from the commandment of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth More than my necessary food. Job considered the word of God as more important than his necessary food.
Matthew 4:1-4 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. (2) And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. (3) Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread." (4) But He answered and said, "It is written, 'MAN SHALL NOT LIVE BY BREAD ALONE, BUT BY EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS FROM THE MOUTH OF GOD.' "
The Lord had fasted for forty days and nights, and He was hungry. The Devil was suggesting that since Jesus claimed that He was the Son of God and the Creator of all things, He could give a command and create bread for His needs from stones. "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.". Colossians 1:16-17 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. (17) And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.
Jesus, in responding to the tempter, has given us the dynamics of Man's primary functioning. Man is placed in a unique place from the rest of creation. Yes, we do need food to eat and so forth, for these are the necessities of life. However, our life is lived out of our habitat in God. Acts 17:28 for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, 'For we are also His offspring.'
We do need the necessities of life to live. Jesus ate and rested, but His life was lived according to the Father's will. John 6:38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. In fulfilling the will of God, our necessities or our bread are met. Matthew 6:31-33 "Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' (32) For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. (33) But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
The word 'first' is about prioritisation. These two options, bread and the word of God, will repeatedly present themselves before us in life. Our decision has to be to reject the bread option and execute the word of God. I can imagine how strange this must sound to many of us, for our lives are lived almost entirely on acquiring the necessities of life, and that in abundance, or living by bread.
We go about our daily lives, but whatever we do, we do all for the glory of God. I Corinthians 10:31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. The Lord assures us that when we seek first His kingdom, which is His word or His will, then all our necessities are met in an added manner.
Lot chose the green fields of the river Jordan. He thought that this decision would meet his necessities of food and water for his herds. Genesis 13:10-11 And Lot lifted his eyes and saw all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere (before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah) like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt as you go toward Zoar. (11) Then Lot chose for himself all the plain of Jordan, and Lot journeyed east. And they separated from each other.
Lot was making a bread choice. Where did this choice lead him? Lot went far away from God. Abraham surrendered his life to God and waited for God to meet his needs. Where did this word choice lead him? Genesis 13:14-15 And the LORD said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: "Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are-northward, southward, eastward, and westward; (15) for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever.
When we make a word choice by rejecting the bread option, we will witness the provision of God not only for ourselves but for generations. The Jews of Berea were seeking to live by God's word. Are we prepared to travel this journey with God?
