Trusting and obeying God's commands
Acts 17 - Series 02/Episode 06 - Wed 14th Oct 2026 - Trusting and obeying God's commands - Acts 17:10-15 - MINISTRY IN BEREA - Genesis 02:16-17
_Acts 17:11-12 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. (12) Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men.
The Jews of Berea received the Word of God with all readiness. This is an amazing quality to have. Are we ready, eager and willing to receive God's Word? For the Word of God is a command to obey, not a good thought or idea to mull over.
This was Cornelius's wonderful response to Peter. Acts 10:33 So I sent to you immediately, and you have done well to come. Now therefore, we are all present before God, to hear all the things commanded you by God."Cornelius was a man of authority, and he understood the meaning and implications of a command. We must approach the Word of God with the same attitude as Cornelius.
God has command over us, for He is our King, and He reigns over us. We live in a kingdom relationship with God. He commands us, and we are His subjects. We are to subject our will to His will. We dethrone our will, and we enthrone Him and His will in our lives. There is a constant exchange that is taking place in our inner man. If this is not happening and our life is being controlled by our will, then we do not have any place in His kingdom. Matthew 7:21-23 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. (22) Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?' (23) And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!'
This was the fundamental lesson that the Lord was teaching the Israelites in their journey across the desert. Deuteronomy 8:2-3 And you shall remember that the LORD your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. (3) So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the LORD.
Living by the word of God is obedience to His command. The majority of them failed to learn this lesson of obedience to the command of God. I Corinthians 10:5 But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. The concern of God for His church is whether we will learn from the folly of the Israelites. I Corinthians 10:11 Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.
God commanded Adam not to eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Genesis 2:16-17 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, "Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; (17) but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die." This was non-negotiable for Adam and Eve. They had to be subject to God's command. They were given free will, but they had to willingly subject themselves to God's will. In doing so, they were in His kingdom; they were trusting God, they were loving God, and they were alive.
The devil's strategy was to take them out of this relationship with God. Consider the question that the serpent asked the woman. Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, "*Has God indeed said, 'You shall not eat of every tree of the garden'?"
Consider the subtle but most vicious change that the serpent introduced. The serpent removed the word 'command' and replaced it with 'said'. God did not 'say' that they should not eat the fruit of this particular tree, but God 'commanded' them. The moment God's word moves from a command to a saying, then the entire relationship with God changes.
We are often coming to the word of God as 'sayings' of God, not as commands of God. In the armed forces, a soldier has to obey the command of the officer. To obey the command of the officer, the soldier must trust his officer. So trusting and obedience go hand in hand.
This was the wonderful quality of the Berean Jews. They trusted God, and they were willing to obey God.
