Acts 16:35-40 And when it was day, the magistrates sent the officers, saying, "Let those men go." (36) So the keeper of the prison reported these words to Paul, saying, "The magistrates have sent to let you go. Now therefore depart, and go in peace." (37) But Paul said to them, "They have beaten us openly, uncondemned Romans, and have thrown us into prison. And now do they put us out secretly? No indeed! Let them come themselves and get us out." (38) And the officers told these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Romans. (39) Then they came and pleaded with them and brought them out, and asked them to depart from the city. (40) So they went out of the prison and entered the house of Lydia; and when they had seen the brethren, they encouraged them and departed.
Paul prescribed an action step that the magistrates must take in this situation. The officers and magistrates could have resisted Paul's instructions and told him to remain within his limits. We see something different happening here. The officers and magistrates were truly afraid and were willing to comply with what Paul told them to do. This tells us that the status of being a Roman citizen was a weighty matter in the Roman system.
The world is under the control of the evil one. I John 5:19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one. The Lord Jesus has defeated the devil on the cross. Colossians 2:14-15 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. (15) Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.
Jesus is now lifted to be above all thrones and authorities. Ephesians 1:18-21 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, (19) and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power (20) which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, (21) far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.
This high position of Jesus, which is above all dominions and authorities, is given to the church. Ephesians 1:22-23 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, (23) which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. The church fills out and expresses the high position of Jesus over all rule and powers. Are we as the church fulfilling our calling?
This is the eternal plan and purpose of God. Ephesians 3:9-11 and to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ; (10) to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places, (11) according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord,
This is what our Lord declared. Matthew 16:16-19 Simon Peter answered and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." (17) Jesus answered and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. (18) And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. (19) And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."
Christ, the Son of the living God, is the foundation of the church. The authority of hell cannot prevail against the church. The church must know and execute God's authority. This was what Paul was doing when he responded to the officers. "They have beaten us openly, uncondemned Romans, and have thrown us into prison. And now do they put us out secretly? No indeed! Let them come themselves and get us out." These were words of exercising authority as the church.
The church, to a large extent, has abdicated its identity, role, position, authority and executive functions. This is why the devil continues with all his destructive ways. The devil is confident that the church will not challenge him.
Learning: We must stand up, take our position, and bring the rule of God to earth.
