Acts 16:35-40 And when it was day, the magistrates sent the officers, saying, "Let those men go." (36) So the keeper of the prison reported these words to Paul, saying, "The magistrates have sent to let you go. Now therefore depart, and go in peace." (37) But Paul said to them, "They have beaten us openly, uncondemned Romans, and have thrown us into prison. And now do they put us out secretly? No indeed! Let them come themselves and get us out." (38) And the officers told these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Romans. (39) Then they came and pleaded with them and brought them out, and asked them to depart from the city. (40) So they went out of the prison and entered the house of Lydia; and when they had seen the brethren, they encouraged them and departed.
People around the world think they can commit evil and get away with it. They have forgotten that there is God before whom they must reckon. Paul confronted the magistrates about the wickedness that they had done.
The Lord hates the ways, manipulations, and the manoeuvring of wicked people. Proverbs 15:9 The way of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, But He loves him who follows righteousness. The Lord sees the heart, and He knows the evil plans of man. Proverbs 11:20-21 Those who are of a perverse heart are an abomination to the LORD, But the blameless in their ways are His delight. (21) Though they join forces, the wicked will not go unpunished; But the posterity of the righteous will be delivered. Judgement came on the magistrates very quickly when they learnt that Paul and Silas were Romans. Jeremiah 17:9-10 "The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it? (10) I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings.
The magistrates had broken three laws. 1. A Roman citizen had the right to a proper trial before judgment was pronounced. A Roman citizen could not be beaten, flogged, imprisoned, or punished without a formal legal hearing. 2. The right to appeal to Rome. Paul and Silas, being Romans, could appeal to the higher Roman authorities since a gross violation of justice had been done and that too in public. This would have severe consequences for the magistrates. 3. The right to be exempt from degrading punishments. Being stripped and beaten with rods in public (as Paul and Silas suffered) was strictly forbidden for Roman citizens. This is why Paul later says in Acts 22:25 And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion who stood by, "Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and uncondemned?"
The wicked people think that there is nothing that can come against them, but reckoning will soon happen. Psalms 37:9-10 For evildoers shall be cut off; But those who wait on the LORD, They shall inherit the earth. (10) For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more; Indeed, you will look carefully for his place, But it shall be no more. Evil people cannot think that they can hide from the eyes of God. Galatians 6:7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. The reward of the evil people will come on them. Isaiah 3:11 Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, For the reward of his hands shall be given him. There is also the final judgment and wrath of God that awaits the wicked.
The magistrates did not realise that there was a greater judgment that was upon them than that of the Roman legal system. Romans 2:2-4 But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things. (3) And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God? (4) Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?
This is the warning from the Lord. Romans 2:8-9 but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness-indignation and wrath, (9) tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; / II Thessalonians 1:6-9 since it is a righteous thing with God to repay with tribulation those who trouble you, (7) and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, (8) in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. (9) These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,
