Acts 16:35-40 And when it was day, the magistrates sent the officers, saying, "Let those men go." (36) So the keeper of the prison reported these words to Paul, saying, "The magistrates have sent to let you go. Now therefore depart, and go in peace." (37) But Paul said to them, "They have beaten us openly, uncondemned Romans, and have thrown us into prison. And now do they put us out secretly? No indeed! Let them come themselves and get us out." (38) And the officers told these words to the magistrates, and they were afraid when they heard that they were Romans. (39) Then they came and pleaded with them and brought them out, and asked them to depart from the city. (40) So they went out of the prison and entered the house of Lydia; and when they had seen the brethren, they encouraged them and departed.
The jailor was informed that Paul and Silas needed to be set free. This news came like an extra blessing. The jailor was thrilled. Paul, though, was made of a different mettle. Yes, Paul and Silas were surely glad that they had been set free, but they knew how to handle every situation. Philippians 4:12-13 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. (13) I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Paul was rested in the Lord. Circumstances did not dictate his feelings.
II Corinthians 6:3-10 We give no offense in anything, that our ministry may not be blamed. (4) But in all things we commend ourselves as ministers of God: in much patience, in tribulations, in needs, in distresses, (5) in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in sleeplessness, in fastings;(6) by purity, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Spirit, by sincere love, (7) by the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armor of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, (8) by honor and dishonor, by evil report and good report; as deceivers, and yet true; (9) as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold we live; as chastened, and yet not killed; (10) as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things. This is the inner stability that we must possess as God's people.
Paul's concern was always to be a witness for the Gospel. II Corinthians 4:7-10 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. (8) We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; (9) persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed- (10) always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.
Paul's life is an example for us to follow. I Corinthians 11:1 Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ. Paul saw himself as a father to the people of God. I Corinthians 4:15-16 For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. (16) Therefore I urge you, imitate me. Paul is also calling all of us to be patterns for each other. Philippians 3:17 Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern. Following godly patterns is a highly objective discipline. Philippians 4:8-9 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy-meditate on these things. (9) The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.
The jailor was receiving a life lesson from Paul and Silas. He and his family had heard the word of God from Paul and Silas, believed, and were baptised. Now they were having a practical life lesson being demonstrated before them in the way Paul and Silas handled the news from the magistrates.
Many of us are blown by the wind of circumstances. When the news is good, we are excited, and when the circumstances are against us, we plummet into discouragement and despondency. Learning: We must be God-rested to handle all our circumstances, gloriously. James 1:5-8 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. (6) But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. (7) For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; (8) he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
