Acts 16:29-34 Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. (30) And he brought them out and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" (31) So they said, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household." (32) Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. (33) And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family were baptised. (34) Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household.
There was great rejoicing in the home of the jailor. The jailor now took Paul and Silas into his home as guests of the family. The family had heard the word of God, had repented and surrendered their lives to Jesus. They were baptised, and now this was the time for celebration.
Earlier, in the day, Paul and Silas had been accused on false charges, condemned without a trial, beaten with rods in public, thrown into the inner prison and their feet placed in the stocks. They had prayed and sung hymns, and then the earthquake happened. The prison doors were opened, and the prisoners were all loosed from their chains. The prisoners did not run away, but were all with Paul and Silas listening to them. There was a revival taking place in the prison.
The jailor and his family were converted and were baptised. Now, their wounds had been attended to, and they were enjoying a warm meal in the jailor's home with his family. It was indeed an eventful evening.
The Lord's ways are marvellous. Job 9:10 He does great things past finding out, Yes, wonders without number._ With the Lord, we must expect the unexpected. Ephesians 3:17-21 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, (18) may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height- (19) to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. (20) Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, (21) to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. This is the experience of the church.
A church was established in the jailor's home. The home and the church are a continuum. This was the experience of the early church. Acts 2:46-47 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, (47) praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.
The witness of the family and the home is powerful. People in the neighbourhood can see the reality of Christ in the home life of a Christian family. We must raise powerful Christ-centred homes that will spontaneously and naturally influence and have an impact for the Gospel.
Paul had an impact on Aquila and Priscilla. Acts 18:1-3 After these things Paul departed from Athens and went to Corinth. (2) And he found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla (because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to depart from Rome); and he came to them. (3) So, because he was of the same trade, he stayed with them and worked; for by occupation they were tentmakers.
They had a church in Ephesus in their home. I Corinthians 16:19 The churches of Asia greet you. Aquila and Priscilla greet you heartily in the Lord, with the church that is in their house.
The home of Aquila and Priscilla was a discipleship base in Ephesus. Acts 18:24-26 Now a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man and mighty in the Scriptures, came to Ephesus. (25) This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of the Lord, though he knew only the baptism of John. (26) So he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.
Aquila and Priscilla had moved from Corinth to Ephesus and then to Rome. In all these places, the church met in their home. Romans 16:3-5 Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, (4) who risked their own necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles. (5) Likewise greet the church that is in their house. Greet my beloved Epaenetus, who is the firstfruits of Achaia to Christ.
Learning: Let us ensure that our homes and families are lights in our neighbourhoods.
