Acts 16:29-34 Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. (30) And he brought them out and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" (31) So they said, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household." (32) Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. (33) And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family were baptized. (34) Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household.
The jailor was bearing the fruit of repentance. As soon as he heard the message, the Lord touched his heart, and he gave his life to Christ. As soon as he was converted, he began to display the fruit of his conversion. He washed and took care of the injuries of Paul and Silas.
This was the same hardened jailor who threw Paul and Silas into the inner prison and fastened their feet to the stocks. He did not see or hear them screaming, shouting, cursing or being violent as fierce criminals would do, but he heard them praying and singing hymns. The jailor was not moved. He went to sleep convinced that he had nothing to worry about from Paul and Silas.
Then his conversion took place. This experienced jailor took Paul and Silas, washed, cleaned and dressed their wounds from the severe beating with rods that they had received in public. This is unimaginable. Let us keep in mind that he does not know as yet that Paul is a Roman. He's thinking of Paul and Silas as Jews. Most Romans generally viewed Jews with suspicion, irritation, and cultural contempt. There is no way a Roman jailor, in normal circumstances, would take care of and dress the wounds of his Jewish prisoners. The Lord had come into his life, and the jailor's life was being transformed.
When we give our lives to Christ and invite Him into our hearts, the Lord produces in us fruits of repentance through His Holy Spirit. Acts 26:20 but declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance.
The Spirit of God convicts us of our sin and causes us to turn around and do the works of repentance. John 16:8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: When the Holy Spirit does the work of convicting us of our sin, the result will be the fruit of repentance.
Zacchaeus produced the fruit of repentance. Luke 19:8-10 Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold." (9) And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; (10) for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost."
The fruit of repentance is that we crucify the flesh and allow the Holy Spirit to produce His fruit from within us. Galatians 5:22-24 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, (23) gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. (24) And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Without him realising it, the jailor was dying with Christ and being led by the Holy Spirit. As we consciously die with Christ and yield to the leading of the Holy Spirit, He will produce His nature from within us. Romans 8:13-14 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. (14) For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
The Holy Spirit transforms us from glory to glory. II Corinthians 3:18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. The Holy Spirit transformation was happening in the jailor. Ezekiel 36:26-27 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. (27) I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. It is the Lord who works out His purposes in us. Philippians 2:13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.
Learning: Repentance is turning and opening our heart to the Lord. The fruit of repentance is the Holy Spirit's work within that surrendered heart.
