Acts 16:29-34 Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. (30) And he brought them out and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" (31) So they said, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household." (32) Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. (33) And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family were baptized. (34) Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household.
The apostles told the jailor to believe on the Lord Jesus. He and his household would be saved. It is interesting to note that in this account of the jailer's conversion, he and his household are mentioned several times.
We spoke of belief in Jesus, and we have understood that believing in Jesus means to stop believing in wealth. Wealth can take the place of God in our lives. Matthew 6:24 "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. *You cannot serve God and mammon.
Anxiety about meeting our material needs is a sure indicator that we are trusting wealth and not trusting God. Matthew 6:31-32 "Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' (32) For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. The family or the household must come to faith in Jesus, since our faith in Jesus is all about not being anxious over material priorities but knowing and living by belonging to God.
Knowing and living in the habitat of Jesus comes from the choices that we take as a family. Our material concerns often drive our choices, and this is where our belief in Jesus makes the difference. Belief in Jesus will cause us to make our household choices for God's kingdom. Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
The jailor and his household were saved. They were now coming to faith and belief in Jesus, wherein their life choices as a family would no longer be based on material priorities but on Jesus and His kingdom. Have our families, and we, truly come to believe in Jesus? What are our life choices based on today? What are we anxious about? If the answer to these questions is the material priorities of life, then we must know that we are not saved.
The other important matter here is that the Lord is always the God of generations. For the jailor, his conversion was not only for him but also for his household. Genesis 17:7 And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you.
This is how the Lord introduced Himself to the people of Israel. Exodus 3:14-15 And God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." And He said, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.' " (15) Moreover God said to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: 'The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.'
We make choices in life as though we live only for ourselves and for our time. We are not considering the reality that we are a part of God's generational plans and purposes. God's heart breaks over us, for we are a hindrance to the plans and purposes of God. God is a God of generations. Exodus 20:5-6 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, (6) but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
The Lord is a covenant God, and He longs for us to be His covenant people, over generations. Psalms 103:17-18 But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting On those who fear Him, And His righteousness to children's children, (18) To such as keep His covenant, And to those who remember His commandments to do them.
This is God's expectation of His people. Isaiah 58:12 Those from among you Shall build the old waste places; You shall raise up the foundations of many generations; And you shall be called the Repairer of the Breach, The Restorer of Streets to Dwell In.
