Believing in Jesus

Acts 16:29-34 Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. (30) And he brought them out and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" (31) So they said, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household." (32) Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. (33) And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family were baptized. (34) Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household.
The answer of Paul and Silas to the jailor was clear: "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household." We must come to grips with the understanding of believing on the Lord Jesus. Believing in the Lord Jesus is not an intellectual acceptance of Jesus. We live in times where several voices are shouting aloud to make us intellectually accept their point of view. If intellectual acceptance is accorded to a particular perspective, it is considered a great victory. We call this belief.
This is not belief. Believing in the Lord Jesus is placing our lives on Jesus. The Rich Young Ruler came asking Jesus how he could have eternal life. Mark 10:17 Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?"
The Lord first clarified that goodness is only with God. Then the Lord reminded him of some of the commandments. The Lord expected him to realise that he could never be good or righteous before God by keeping the commandments. The Rich Young Ruler tried to prove before Jesus that he was righteous according to the law. Mark 10:18-20 So Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. (19) You know the commandments: 'DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY,' 'DO NOT MURDER,' 'DO NOT STEAL,' 'DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS,' 'Do not defraud,' 'HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER.'" (20) And he answered and said to Him, "Teacher, all these things I have kept from my youth."
The Lord then placed before him the true interpretation and application of the law. Mark 10:21 Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, "One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me."
This is where the Rich Young Ruler should have fallen at the feet of Jesus, acknowledging that he was not righteous before God, but was willing to cast himself completely on Jesus to fulfil the righteousness of God. This is belief. Praise the Lord, the jailor came to this place of believing in Jesus immediately. This did not happen with the Rich Young Ruler. Mark 10:22 But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions._ The Rich Young Ruler could not place his faith in Jesus by leaving his trust in wealth. Since he did not believe in Jesus, he lost eternal life, though he came asking for eternal life, just as the jailor.
Then the Lord told his disciples that it is not easy for people to believe in Him. The disciples were stunned at his words and wondered who could be saved. Mark 10:23-27 Then Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, "How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!" (24) And the disciples were astonished at His words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, "Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God! (25) It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." (26) And they were greatly astonished, saying among themselves, "Who then can be saved?" (27) But Jesus looked at them and said, "With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible."
It is not possible with man to come to the point of placing their faith or believing in Jesus. Believing in Jesus is to stop trusting wealth, which is practically impossible with man. It is only possible with God. Thus, for a person to believe in Jesus is a miracle or the work of God. It is only God who can open a person's inner eyes to realise that he or she can believe in Jesus and, at the same time, not trust in wealth.
Learning: The jailor understood what it meant to believe in Jesus. This is where we must lead people. People must know that believing in Jesus is not an intellectual acceptance of Jesus, but believing in Jesus is to stop trusting wealth.
