Acts 16:29-34 Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. (30) And he brought them out and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" (31) So they said, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household." (32) Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. (33) And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family were baptized. (34) Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household.
Paul and Silas had been stripped, severely beaten with rods in public, thrown into the dungeons and their feet placed in the stocks. Then the earthquake took place, the prison doors were opened, and all the prisoners were set free from their chains. The prisoners had not fled, but had remained with Paul and Silas. The jailor decided to end his life but was rescued by Paul.
It was at this point that the jailor asked a life-defining question, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" The apostles had to be ready to answer this all-important question of life. Imagine if they had been too caught up with all the events of the day that this question caught them unprepared to respond. I have missed many opportunities such as these because the events of the moment had overtaken me.
I Peter 3:14-16 But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you are blessed. "AND DO NOT BE AFRAID OF THEIR THREATS, NOR BE TROUBLED." (15) But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; (16) having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed.
Paul and Silas had suffered for righteousness sake. They were not afraid of the threats, beatings, pain, imprisonments or hardships. They were praying and singing hymns. They were sanctifying the Lord in their hearts. The Lord knew that in their hearts there was no bitterness or ill will against their persecutors. This was what made Paul and Silas ready to share the Gospel with the jailor.
The jailor had seen the hope that was in the apostles, and he longed to have the same hope. Paul and Silas shared the Gospel in meekness, in the fear of God and in the strength of the Holy Spirit. Their conscience was clear that they did not hold any resentment or enmity against those who perpetrated evil against them.
Colossians 4:5-6 Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. (6) Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.
Wisdom comes from above, and so we must be God-dependent for His wisdom in all matters. _James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him._ Paul and Silas were redeeming the time as they answered the question of the jailor. Their answer was quick and direct. Our words for communication must be in the grace of God, not in our intelligence or smartness. We must be led by the Spirit of God at all times.
_Ephesians 6:15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;_ We must be prepared with the Gospel. The Gospel is articulated for us. _I Corinthians 15:1-4 Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, (2) by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you-unless you believed in vain. (3) For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, (4) and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,
To receive the Gospel, a person must place their faith in Jesus. Romans 10:9-10 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. (10) For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Placing their faith in Jesus requires a person to turn around from the world and come into Christ. II Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
Learning: Paul and Silas called upon the jailor to surrender his life completely to Christ. This was a call for him and his family. Our task is to invite people to place their faith in Jesus for salvation.
