Acts 16:29-34 Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. (30) And he brought them out and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" (31) So they said, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household." (32) Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. (33) And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family were baptized. (34) Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household.
The jailor was trembling as he brought the apostles out of the inner prison and asked the most important question in life. "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?". There were a few critical matters already in place for the jailor to ask the apostles this question.
He knew that he needed to be saved. What did he need to be saved from? He was a Roman soldier far away from Judea to have had any encounter with Jesus. Jesus came to seek and save the lost. Luke 19:10 for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost."
The very life and behaviour of Paul and Silas made this jailor realise that he was in a state of death and was lost for eternity. II Corinthians 2:14-16 Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. (15) For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. (16) To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death, and to the other the aroma of life leading to life. And who is sufficient for these things?
The Lord is diffusing His fragrance through us in every place. He leads us in triumph in Christ Jesus. Paul and Silas were stripped, severely beaten with rods in public, thrown into the dungeons and their feet placed in the stocks. Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns. The result was the earthquake; the prison doors were thrown open, and all the prisoners were loosed from their chains. It was the jailor and the Philippian authorities who had lost, and it was the apostles who were victorious.
Are we experiencing and diffusing God's victorious fragrance in our daily lives? How do we deal with challenges? Are we being like Paul and Silas? God diffuses His fragrance through us in every place.
We are to God the fragrance of Christ. This is a precious thought. The Lord God is seeking to smell the fragrance of Christ in us. Often what comes from us is not the fragrance of Christ but the odour of ourselves.
We are to God the fragrance of Christ to two categories of people. One group are those who are being saved, and the other is those who are perishing. We are the aroma of death to those who are rejecting God. To those who are receiving Christ, we are the aroma of life. To the jailor, Paul and Silas were the aroma of life. He wanted to be saved from the state of death and brought to life. Is this how we are to the people around us?
The lives of Paul and Silas had so powerfully provoked the jailer that he knew they had the answer to this question: "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?". Are people around us provoked to ask the same question of us? They may express this question differently, but the essence of the question remains the same. They are sure that we have the answer to this crucial question of life. When they ask this question, we must be ready to respond.
The third basis of the jailor asking this question was that he was ready to commit his life completely. The Rich Young Ruler too asked the same question to Jesus. Mark 10:17 Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?"
The Rich Young Ruler was not willing to submit completely to Christ, but wanted eternal life. He walked away from eternal life when he was informed that he and his entire possessions needed to be submitted to God. Whereas the jailor was ready to give himself completely to Christ and receive eternal life. When we bring people to Christ, we must make it known to them the truth of total submission to Christ. We must help people take the leap of faith into the arms of Jesus. They are coming to Jesus not just to escape hell, but they come to Him to live life completely in Him.
Learning: Are we causing people to ask us, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?".
