Acts 16:29-34 Then he called for a light, ran in, and fell down trembling before Paul and Silas. (30) And he brought them out and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"(31) So they said, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household." (32) Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. (33) And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their stripes. And immediately he and all his family were baptized. (34) Now when he had brought them into his house, he set food before them; and he rejoiced, having believed in God with all his household.
Paul prevented the jailor from physical death, and now he took the necessary steps to help the jailor cross from eternal death to eternal life.
The jailor called for a light and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. Why would he do that? The jailor had placed Paul and Silas in the inner prison, with their feet in the stocks. He knew that the authorities had beaten Paul and Silas mercilessly with rods in public. Yet, he did not care for them. Why should he? He expected to hear cursing, screaming and shouting from Paul and Silas. He did not hear any harsh, cruel or angry word from them.
This was the behaviour of our Lord. I Peter 2:19-25 For this is commendable, if because of conscience toward God one endures grief, suffering wrongfully. (20) For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for your faults, you take it patiently? But when you do good and suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God. (21) For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: (22) "WHO COMMITTED NO SIN, NOR WAS DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH"; (23) who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; (24) who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness-by whose stripes you were healed. (25) For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
This is the teaching that Paul gives us. Colossians 3:12-17 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; (13) bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. (14) But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. (15) And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. (16) Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. (17) And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. This teaching that Paul gives us comes from personal experience.
The prisoners were converted by the prayers and hymn singing of Paul and Silas, but not the jailor. The jailor had gone to sleep, probably thinking that these prisoners were strange, for they were not angry, but were praying and singing. He could sleep peacefully, for these two odd prisoners were not going to cause him any trouble. Then the earthquake took place, which set all the prisoners free, especially Paul and Silas, who were high-security prisoners. The jailor was prepared to kill himself when he heard the most shocking and unimaginable words. Paul called out to him, not to kill himself. This broke the jailor.
This hardened jailor was not prepared for this response. He broke down before Paul and Silas. He trembled before the apostles. He knew that he was in the presence of those who were heavenly. Friends, isn't this how it needs to be with each of us in our daily lives, that people will recognise that there is something strange and extraordinary about us? A certain fear needs to grip them, for the powerful presence and glow of the Lord must exude from us.
Luke 5:5-8 But Simon answered and said to Him, "Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net." (6) And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. (7) So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. (8) When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!"
