Acts 16:26-28 Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were loosed. (27) And the keeper of the prison, awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill himself. (28) But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, "Do yourself no harm, for we are all here."
Paul called out with a loud voice, "Do yourself no harm, for we are all here." Paul understood that the jailor was going to kill himself. This was a desperate moment, and desperate action was needed. Paul was the man for the moment. He responded immediately, for a crisis was imminent.
Paul was saving a soul. Isn't this what our task is for the Gospel? We are saving souls from perishing. The first step was to prevent the jailor from killing himself. This is our task too. Our first message is to urge people not to take themselves to destruction.
There are broken and crushed people, as well as the arrogant and proud people around us. Both are in a state of perishing. They need to be rescued from perishing. Our message is a desperate message to all those who are away from God.
Psalm 34:18 The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit. This is the message that we must share with great urgency and passion. Psalm 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds. There are many around us in desperate circumstances. We must be like Paul, whose message was urgent and loud to the Philippian jailor.
The same message is also for those who claim that they do not need God. Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall. Punishment awaits those who, through arrogance, join forces and reject God. Proverbs 16:5 Everyone proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD; Though they join forces, none will go unpunished.
The Lord longs for people to come to Him and cast all their cares upon Him. Matthew 11:28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. It is for us to share this message with people with great urgency and passion. Isaiah 13:11 "I will punish the world for its evil, And the wicked for their iniquity; I will halt the arrogance of the proud, And will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.
To save the souls of those who are burdened, we must let them know that the Lord cares for them and has plans for them. Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. People are a unique creation of God. Psalm 139:14 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well.
The ones who are arrogant need to know that it is the fool who considers himself right in his own eyes. Proverbs 12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But he who heeds counsel is wise. Pride, arrogance and a perverse mouth are ways that make a person in confrontation with God. Proverbs 8:13 The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverse mouth I hate. / Hebrews 10:30-31 For we know Him who said, "VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY," says the Lord. And again, "THE LORD WILL JUDGE HIS PEOPLE." (31) It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Paul stopped the jailor from killing himself by letting him know that the prisoners had not fled but were all there with Paul in the prison.
The first conversion in the prison in Philippi was of the prisoners. The prisoners were converted by the prayer and singing of Paul and Silas. The prisoners were used to hardened criminals. Criminals thrown into the inner prison, with their feet in the stocks, were surely notorious. They would scream, shout and curse, but these criminals were praying and singing hymns. The Lord touched the heart of the prisoners, and instead of fleeing when the prison doors were opened and their chains loosed, they stayed with Paul and Silas. This was a miracle.
The conversion of the prisoners happened because Paul and Silas allowed the Holy Spirit to take away the negative thoughts from within their hearts and replaced them with love and worship of God. Romans 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Will we allow the Lord to heal us so that His healing will flow into the lives of others around us?
Learning: We are here to save souls of those who are broken as well as those who are proud. Healing begins with us from the Lord, and flows through us to others around us.
