Acts 16:26-28 Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were loosed. (27) And the keeper of the prison, awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill himself. (28) But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, "Do yourself no harm, for we are all here."
Why do people want to take their lives? When people live without submitting to the fear of God, the world will dictate their lives. Here are some examples.
King Saul and his armour bearer - I Samuel 31:4-5 Then Saul said to his armorbearer, "Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised men come and thrust me through and abuse me." But his armorbearer would not, for he was greatly afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword and fell on it. (5) And when his armorbearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword, and died with him.
Ahithophel - II Samuel 17:23 Now when Ahithophel saw that his advice was not followed, he saddled a donkey, and arose and went home to his house, to his city. Then he put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died; and he was buried in his father's tomb.
Judas Iscariot - Matthew 27:4-5 saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood." And they said, "What is that to us? You see to it!" (5) Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself.
The Lord strengthens us with His presence in desperate times. Isaiah 41:10 Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.' / Psalm 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
God's word strengthens and encourages us. Psalm 119:28 My soul melts from heaviness; Strengthen me according to Your word. / Jeremiah 15:16 Your words were found, and I ate them, And Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart; For I am called by Your name, O LORD God of hosts.
God strengthens us through His Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. / Ephesians 3:16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man,
God strengthens us through the community of God's people. Galatians 6:2 Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. / I Thessalonians 5:14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all.
The Lord strengthens us through the purpose that He has given us. Philippians 1:6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ; / I Thessalonians 5:23-24 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (24) He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.
The Lord strengthens us through His joy that He gives us. Psalms 28:7-8 The LORD is my strength and my shield; My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart greatly rejoices, And with my song I will praise Him. (8) The LORD is their strength, And He is the saving refuge of His anointed. / Proverbs 17:22 A merry heart does good, like medicine, But a broken spirit dries the bones.
The Lord God strengthens us from within. Psalm 73:26 My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. / Isaiah 40:29-31 He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength. (30) Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall, (31) But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint. / II Corinthians 12:9-10 And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness." Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. (10) Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
Praise the Lord that the Lord kept Paul there to stop the jailor from killing himself.
