Acts 16:26-28 Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were loosed. (27) And the keeper of the prison, awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill himself. (28) But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, "Do yourself no harm, for we are all here."
The magistrates had thrown Paul and Silas into the prison and told the jailor to keep them securely. Acts 16:23 And when they had laid many stripes on them, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to keep them securely. It was the jailor who decided to keep them in the inner prison and fasten their feet to the stocks. Acts 16:24 Having received such a charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.
The jailor could have been considerate of the apostles and not placed their feet in the stocks. He then slept when he should have been alert. He was shaken to his roots when the earthquake took place. The doors of the prison were thrown open, and the chains of all the prisoners were loosed. The jailor awoke in shock, confusion, and darkness. He realised that the prisoners must have all fled. In his state of fear, numbness and chaos, he decided to kill himself.
This is what happens to the people of the world when they meet with God. The jailor's reaction in Acts 16 is a classic biblical pattern when people suddenly encounter the living God - His holiness, His power, His judgment and His reality. They are overwhelmed with shock, fear, confusion, and a sense of doom. Scripture repeatedly shows that when God breaks into the lives of people who are living independent of God, the first response is terror, not comfort.
This is the outcome of the world that is rejecting God. Romans 1:28-32 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; (29) being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, (30) backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, (31) undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; (32) who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.
The Lord does not want anyone to perish in eternal destruction. Man ought to be warned of the terror of the Lord, repent and return to Him. II Peter 3:8-12 But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. (9) The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. (10) But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. (11) Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, (12) looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?
We have seen and witnessed how natural disasters take place and the devastating outcomes. Yet man does not repent and return to the God of heaven and earth. Isaiah 2:19 They shall go into the holes of the rocks, And into the caves of the earth, From the terror of the LORD And the glory of His majesty, When He arises to shake the earth mightily.
Revelation 6:12-14 I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood. (13) And the stars of heaven fell to the earth, as a fig tree drops its late figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind. (14) Then the sky receded as a scroll when it is rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out of its place.
This is to happen when the Lord rises in His vengeance. Revelation 6:15-17 And the kings of the earth, the great men, the rich men, the commanders, the mighty men, every slave and every free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains, (16) and said to the mountains and rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! (17) For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?"
