Acts 16:26-28 Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were loosed. (27) And the keeper of the prison, awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill himself. (28) But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, "Do yourself no harm, for we are all here."
As Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns, the Lord brought about an earthquake. The prison foundations were shaken, the doors of the prison were opened, and everyone's chains were loosed. This is our God.
The magistrates, the slave owners and the entire city thought they had done sufficient harm and had clamped down on Paul and the team's interest in sharing the Gospel in Philippi. The apostles were now locked away in the inner prison, and so the city had done away with the disciples of Jesus Christ. This is the agenda of the present political party at the centre in New Delhi.
How are we to respond? Are we to stop sharing the good news of Jesus with our people because of these threats? Let the lesson that we are learning encourage us. Let us be like Paul and Silas. They prayed and sang hymns when they had no guarantee about what would happen to them. Their guarantee was the Lord Himself, and He is our guarantee. He will come through in the most wonderful way, of this we are assured. Let us not be afraid to lay down our lives for the Gospel in India and in other places around the world.
The prison, which the people of Philippi thought was their strong bastion, was shaken by the earthquake, the prison doors were opened, and all the prisoners were loosed from their chains, including Paul and Silas, whose feet were in the stocks. The Lord will shake the very things that people consider as unshakeable and unbreakable to reveal that He is God.
The Lord does His great work not to prove His greatness and power, but He longs that the minds of the people will be opened, they will repent, return to the Lord, and He will restore them to fullness of life. The effect of the earthquake was on the whole city. The magistrates and leaders were frightened, and they realised that they had wronged the apostles in beating them publicly and throwing them into prison. They quickly wanted to set things right. Acts 16:35 And when it was day, the magistrates sent the officers, saying, "Let those men go."
When we see all the evil and wickedness in our world, why doesn't the Lord perform a similar powerful natural experience that will shake people into realising they need to fear God? We wish that the Lord would shake up our leaders and make them change the laws against Christians. The Lord performs these works from time to time, and some people are shaken into repentance and return to God. Yet, the world continues in its arrogance and in its defiance of God.
The Lord does not want anyone to perish in the eternal destruction but to repent and return to Him. II Peter 3:3-9 knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, (4) and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation." (5) For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, (6) by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. (7) But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. (8) But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. (9) The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
People are choosing not to consider the created world. People do not want to consider that it is the Lord God who created all things by His word. They do not want to consider that God is preserving the world that now exists. They are deliberately ignoring the fact of the day of judgment and the perdition of the ungodly.
Our prayer is very specific for the leaders of our nation, India, as we soon celebrate our Independence Day, that their eyes may be opened, they may see the God of heaven and earth, repent, and return to Him, for He will abundantly pardon. Isaiah 55:7 Let the wicked forsake his way, And the unrighteous man his thoughts; Let him return to the LORD, And He will have mercy on him; And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon.
