Acts 16:25 But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.
The Lord had brought these prisoners to the prison in Philippi to listen to the prayers and hymns of Paul and Silas. God positions people in surprising places so they can encounter His word, His presence, and His saving grace.
We move along in life with our plans, but at the same time, we must remain conscious that the Lord is constantly at work and He will keep entering into our circumstances in unique ways. Proverbs 16:9 A man's heart plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps._ We must anticipate the move of the Lord and be ready to listen and move with Him. Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns when they could have been grieving over all that had happened to them. They were ready for the next great move of God.
The Lord was orchestrating His move in the life of the Ethiopian Eunuch and in Philip. Philip had to be sensitive to listen to the voice of the angel of God.
Acts 8:26-27 Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, "Arise and go toward the south along the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza." This is desert. (27) So he arose and went. And behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, and had come to Jerusalem to worship, / Acts 8:36-39 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, "See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?" (37) Then Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." And he answered and said, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God." (38) So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. (39) Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing.
The Eunuch met the Lord and was transformed. He went home rejoicing. Early historical evidence is that the Ethiopian Eunuch became a witness of the gospel to his nation. The strongest support comes from the 2nd-4th century Christian writers and the Ethiopian church tradition that he carried the message of Christ back to his homeland.
The Lord has placed people in different geographical places, in different periods, to dwell there with our unique cultures and languages. He has done this so we could seek the Lord in our own settings, grope for Him and find Him. The Lord is not far from anyone, in any context. Acts 17:26-27 And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, (27) so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us;
The prisoners were encountering God. They chose to seek Him and find Him as they related with Paul and Silas. The Lord may take us to different contexts, but as we do so, let us be conscious that the Lord is at work in that context. He is moving people to seek Him and find Him. The Lord may use us as He used Paul and Silas. Wherever we are and wherever we go, we have a single agenda, which is to be conduits for the Gospel. The Lord is reaching people, and He will use us as His instruments.
Our workplaces are sacred places, where we work as unto God. This means we will be people of excellence in our places of study or profession, regardless of how we are being treated in these places. This is to worship God and be a blessing to people through our work. As we do so, the Lord will be orchestrating the circumstances. Without us even realising what is taking place, people around us will be impacted by the Gospel. Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns. They may have been aware that the other prisoners were listening, but the Lord was unfolding His purposes.
Paul writes to the Philippian church, reminding them how his imprisonment turned out to be for the expansion of the Gospel. Not only was there the growth of the Gospel, but other believers, too, became confident and spoke the word of God without fear. Philippians 1:12-14 But I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel, (13) so that it has become evident to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest, that my chains are in Christ; (14) and most of the brethren in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.
