Act 16:25 But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.
What Paul and Silas had on their hands was time. Everything else was taken away. They had each other. They could have spent their time doing a debrief, analysing the whole incident piece by piece and feeling even more angry and depressed at what had happened to them. They could have looked at each other for consolation and comfort. Isn't this what we would have done?
Paul and Silas decided that the best thing for them to do was to pray. Their prayer was not a time of sobbing and complaining to God. Wouldn't that have been the substance of our prayer in such a context? Their prayer was a time of rejoicing in God's presence, and so their prayer time was combined with singing hymns.
Friends, this is where we connect with the heart of God. This is the approach that makes us one with God and His ways. This is where we open the door for the blessing of God to be poured out on us. When we complain and are bitter, we are shutting the door for God's abundance to be poured into our lives. Numbers 14:26-31 And the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, (27) "How long shall I bear with this evil congregation who complain against Me? I have heard the complaints which the children of Israel make against Me. (28) Say to them, 'As I live,' says the LORD, 'just as you have spoken in My hearing, so I will do to you: (29) The carcasses of you who have complained against Me shall fall in this wilderness, all of you who were numbered, according to your entire number, from twenty years old and above. (30) Except for Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun, you shall by no means enter the land which I swore I would make you dwell in. (31) But your little ones, whom you said would be victims, I will bring in, and they shall know the land which you have despised.
The people of Israel complained because they had seen the giants. Numbers 13:33 There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight."
Joshua and Caleb, too, had seen the giants, but what was their response? Numbers 14:6-9 But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes; (7) and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: "The land we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land. (8) If the LORD delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, 'a land which flows with milk and honey.' (9) Only do not rebel against the LORD, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the LORD is with us. Do not fear them."
The minority were walking by faith. The majority were walking by sight. How will we choose to be in the daily circumstances of life? Will we be like Paul and Silas, who were praying and singing hymns to God, or will we be like the Israelites who complained, grumbled and were full of bitterness?
Praying and singing hymns to God was not just a technique of prayer. They were praying and singing hymns because they accepted their circumstances, and they were also praying for those who had been unfair to them and had hurt and humiliated them. Prayer heals us. Psalms 34:1-2 I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. (2) My soul shall make its boast in the LORD; The humble shall hear of it and be glad. / Philippians 4:6-7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; (7) and *the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Paul and Silas were healed within as they prayed and sang hymns. They were healed of the anger and bitterness against all those who had been unfair and had hurt and humiliated them. Instead, as they prayed and sang hymns, they were praying for their enemies who had harmed them. Matthew 5:44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,
What was intended to totally crush the apostles had turned into victory as they prayed and sang hymns. II Corinthians 4:8-10 We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; (9) persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed- (10) always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.
