Acts 16:22-24 Then the multitude rose up together against them; and the magistrates tore off their clothes and commanded them to be beaten with rods. (23) And when they had laid many stripes on them, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to keep them securely. (24) Having received such a charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.
Paul and Silas were kept in isolation from the other prisoners. They could not nurse their wounds nor have any physical comfort, which their bodies must have sorely longed for after the heavy beating that they had received.
This was the pain that the Lord went through for us and for creation, so that we are restored to Him. I Peter 2:21-25 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: (22) "WHO COMMITTED NO SIN, NOR WAS DECEIT FOUND IN HIS MOUTH"; (23) who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; (24) who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness-by whose stripes you were healed. (25) For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
The Lord God was reconciling all things to Himself through Jesus. Colossians 1:19-20 For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, (20) and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross.
The Lord went through suffering in His flesh to present us holy, blameless and above reproach in His sight. Colossians 1:21-22 And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled (22) in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight-
As His church, we are to continue steadfast in the Gospel. The Gospel is for man and for all of creation to be restored with God. Colossians 1:23 if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which was preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, became a minister.
Paul then tells us that we too must identify and participate with Him in His suffering for man and creation. This is a mystery that has been hidden from the ages, which is Christ in us, the hope of Glory. Colossians 1:24-27 *I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church*, (25) of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God which was given to me for you, to fulfill the word of God, (26) the mystery which has been hidden from ages and from generations, but now has been revealed to His saints. (27) To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
Suffering that we see in our world represents the fallenness of humanity and creation from the state of Shalom that God provided us in creation. It is from this fallenness that we, as the messengers of the Gospel, are bringing people and creation back to fullness of life in God. We are bringing all things back to the glory of God, for we fell from His glory.
Creation is groaning because of the fallen state of man and is eagerly waiting for mankind to be revealed to his true intended state in God. Romans 8:19-22 For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. (20) For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; (21) because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. (22) For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now.
The fallen state of the world is death. Isaiah 24:4-6 The earth mourns and fades away, The world languishes and fades away; The haughty people of the earth languish. (5) The earth is also defiled under its inhabitants, Because they have transgressed the laws, Changed the ordinance, Broken the everlasting covenant. (6) Therefore the curse has devoured the earth, And those who dwell in it are desolate. Therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, And few men are left.
Jesus is restoring man and creation from death to life, and this is through His suffering, in which we as the church also participate. This was what Paul and Silas were experiencing as His church and for the church.
