Acts 16:22-24 Then *the multitude rose up together against them*; and the magistrates tore off their clothes and commanded them to be beaten with rods. (23) And when they had laid many stripes on them, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to keep them securely. (24) Having received such a charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.
How is it that there was not a single person in the crowd who would stand up for the apostles? Does this not reveal the fallen nature of man?
Romans 3:9-19 What then? Are we better than they? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin. (10) As it is written: "THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NO, NOT ONE; (11) THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS; THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS AFTER GOD. (12) THEY HAVE ALL TURNED ASIDE; THEY HAVE TOGETHER BECOME UNPROFITABLE; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, NO, NOT ONE." (13) "THEIR THROAT IS AN OPEN TOMB; WITH THEIR TONGUES THEY HAVE PRACTICED DECEIT"; "THE POISON OF ASPS IS UNDER THEIR LIPS"; (14) "WHOSE MOUTH IS FULL OF CURSING AND BITTERNESS." (15) "THEIR FEET ARE SWIFT TO SHED BLOOD; (16) DESTRUCTION AND MISERY ARE IN THEIR WAYS; (17) AND THE WAY OF PEACE THEY HAVE NOT KNOWN." (18) "THERE IS NO FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THEIR EYES." (19) Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
All the people knew that Paul had cast out the evil spirit from the slave girl, which caused the slave owners to shut down their trade. The accusation that was now being charged against the apostles was that Paul and the team were Jews who were troubling their city exceedingly. They were teaching customs which were not lawful for them, being Romans, to receive or observe. Everyone, except the magistrates, knew that this was all an evil scheme to beat up and chase away the apostles from Philippi. The magistrates, very foolishly, fell into the trap of the slave owners and the crowd. The magistrates did not exercise due diligence in their functions as magistrates. Instead, they flipped completely into the well-laid trap of the slave owners.
This whole incident reveals how the world has been trapped by the devil, blinded to do his will. II Corinthians 4:3-4 But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, (4) whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.
In this bleak situation, there is hope for those who seek to know the things of the kingdom of God, even though they will be the minority. The frightening principle of life is that whoever has the desire for truth, more light will be given. Whereas, whoever does not have this desire and goes against the truth, even the little that person has will be taken away. Matthew 13:11-16 He answered and said to them, "Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. (12) For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. (13) Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. (14) And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says: 'HEARING YOU WILL HEAR AND SHALL NOT UNDERSTAND, AND SEEING YOU WILL SEE AND NOT PERCEIVE; (15) FOR THE HEARTS OF THIS PEOPLE HAVE GROWN DULL. THEIR EARS ARE HARD OF HEARING, AND THEIR EYES THEY HAVE CLOSED, LEST THEY SHOULD SEE WITH THEIR EYES AND HEAR WITH THEIR EARS, LEST THEY SHOULD UNDERSTAND WITH THEIR HEARTS AND TURN, SO THAT I SHOULD HEAL THEM.' (16) But blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear; Blessed are those who have turned to the truth in a milieu where the whole world approves the lie.
Peter said that he would be with Jesus and was willing to give his life for the Lord. Mark 14:29-31 Peter said to Him, "Even if all are made to stumble, yet I will not be." (30) Jesus said to him, "Assuredly, I say to you that today, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times." (31) But he spoke more vehemently, "If I have to die with You, I will not deny You!" And they all said likewise. / Luke 22:61-62 And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times." (62) So Peter went out and wept bitterly.
Will we stand for Jesus till the very end?
