Acts 16:11-12 Therefore, sailing from Troas, we ran a straight course to Samothrace, and the next day came to Neapolis, (12) and from there to Philippi, which is the foremost city of that part of Macedonia, a colony. And we were staying in that city for some days.
Paul was prevented by the Holy Spirit from going into the province of Asia, first on the left. Again, he was forbidden to go to the right, that he should not enter Bithynia. Finally, he reached Troas and stood face to face with the ocean that lay between him and Europe. Here, he had a vision and saw a man of Macedonia standing in an attitude of entreaty and saying, ...Come over into Macedonia and help us. Note that word, concluding, Acts 16:10 Now after he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go to Macedonia, *concluding* that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them.
God often leaves us to infer our course. God nudges, prompts, convicts, and directs - but He still calls us to choose obedience. God reveals enough to move us, but not so much that our faith becomes unnecessary. Faith without obedience is not faith at all.
The Lord has set before us life and death, and He is calling us to choose life. Deuteronomy 30:19-20 I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; (20) that you may love the LORD your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days; and that you may dwell in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them."
We are called to love the Lord, obey His voice and cling to Him. Why is it that though the Lord has made all things possible for us to love Him and obey Him, yet we rebel against Him?
We are to work out our salvation, but it is the Lord who works it out in us. How much more can the Lord do for us? All that He expects of us is a desire to obey and call on Him when we are battling the desires of the flesh. Can we not call on the Lord when we know that we are struggling to obey Him? It is He who empowers and enables us to love Him and obey Him. Philippians 2:12-13 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; (13) for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure. Let us keep in mind that by our flesh we can never please God, but it is only by the Spirit of God. In Christ, we are not in the flesh but in the Spirit of God. Romans 8:7-9 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. (8) So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. (9) But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
We must learn to lean and discern the voice of the Lord, for He speaks and guides us. Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; (6) In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. / Isaiah 30:21 Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, "This is the way, walk in it," Whenever you turn to the right hand Or whenever you turn to the left.
Psalms 32:8-9 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye. (9) Do not be like the horse or like the mule, Which have no understanding, Which must be harnessed with bit and bridle, Else they will not come near you.
This is the lovely focus as well as freedom that we must exercise. He will teach us and guide us, but we must not get stuck in our own ways and understanding. To the extent that we have understood the ways of God, we must walk in them, but at the same time be open to His leading. Philippians 3:16 Nevertheless, to the degree that we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us be of the same mind.
Abraham obeyed and went, but he did not have details. This is the same stability that we must have in life to discern the ways of God and obey. Hebrews 11:8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.
