Oneness in the body of Christ
Acts 15 - Series 2/Episode 10 - Thu, 16th Apr 2026 - Oneness in the body of Christ - Acts 15:22-35 - THE ANNOUNCEMENT - John 17:21-23
Acts 15:25-27 it seemed good to us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, (26) men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (27) We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who will also report the same things by word of mouth.
The churches had to know that the Council had discussed the matter and reached a conclusion, which was right, in their understanding. The churches had entrusted the matter in dispute to the Jerusalem Council, and so the Council had to reassure the churches that the trust that they placed in them had been vindicated. They had thoroughly discussed the matter, and a satisfactory decision had been reached.
In all matters of dispute of the body of Christ, we must be sure that we can reach conclusions that are good to all concerned, and this would happen with oneness amongst the leadership of the church.
The church must continue in oneness. Acts 1:14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. This was the amazing oneness in the church that was witnessed by all. Acts 2:46-47 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, (47) praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.
Paul expressed his deep desire for oneness in the church. I Corinthians 1:10-11 Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. (11) For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe's household, that there are contentions among you.
As we see in this passage, there were divisions and contentions within the church. What does this tell us? *God has put in place all that is necessary for us to have oneness in the body of Christ, but we have chosen to allow divisions among us to be fostered.* This is ridiculous, isn't it, that we continue to have divisions in the church for 2000years? If the Lord had not made the way for oneness in the body of Christ, we could give excuses, but what excuse will we give to God for our divisions?
In Christ, we are all one. Colossians 3:11 where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all. He made us 'one' by abolishing in His flesh the enmity. Ephesians 2:15 having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace,
Through the Spirit of God, we are made one. I Corinthians 12:12-13 For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. (13) For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body-whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free-and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.
Jesus is praying for us for our oneness. John 17:21-23 that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. (22) And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: (23) I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.
He gave us a new commandment. God's commandments always come with His enablement. John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. (35) By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." It is God who enables us to fulfil His commands. Philippians 2:13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.
The church is called to live out this oneness. Philippians 2:1-2 Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, (2) fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind._ / Colossians 3:14-15 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. (15) And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. / Romans 12:5 so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.
